Text of the agreement
  Background and Negotiations
   

In May 2000 Mexico and the EFTA member states -- Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland -- met in Geneva, Switzerland and iniated technical talks towards a possible EFTA-Mexico free trade agreement. The first round of negotiations took place on 6-7 July 2000 in Geneva. The second round was held in Mexico City on 7-14 September 2000. The third round, also held in Mexico City, took place from 2 to 6 October 2000 and the fourth and final round of the Mexico-EFTA negotiations took place in Geneva from 30 October to 3 November 2000. The Mexico-EFTA free trade agreement was signed in Mexico City on 27 November 2000.

  Entry into Force
   

The Mexico-EFTA free trade agreement entered into force on 1 July 2001.The agreement includes a common text plus complementary bilateral agreements on agriculture. Mexico has issued a number of documents relating to the implementation of the agreement.

Implementation of the Agreement

   

Article 70 of the Agreement establishes the EFTA-Mexico Joint Committee, comprised of representatives of each party, to supervise the implemenation of the Agreement. The Joint Committee is to meet regularly, normally once a year.

The first meeting of the EFTA-Mexico Joint Committee took place in Mexico City on 22 October 2002; the second was held in Geneva on 7 November 2003 and the third meeting of the EFTA-Mexico Joint Committee took place in Mexico City on 3 March 2005.

On 22-23 September 2008, the Joint Committee under the EFTA-Mexico FTA met in Geneva, Switzerland and decided to revise the regulation on direct transport of goods
