Text of the agreement
  Background and Negotiations
   

In May 2000 Mexico and the EFTA member states -- Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland -- met in Geneva, Switzerland and initiated technical talks towards a possible EFTA-Mexico free trade agreement.

The first round of negotiations took place on 06-07 July 2000 in Geneva. The second round was held in Mexico City on 07-14 September 2000. The third round, also held in Mexico City, took place from 02 to 06 October 2000 and the fourth and final round of the Mexico-EFTA negotiations took place in Geneva from 30 October to 03 November 2000.

The Mexico-EFTA free trade agreement was signed in Mexico City on 27 November 2000.

  Entry into Force
   

The Mexico-EFTA free trade agreement entered into force on 01 July 2001.The agreement includes a common text plus complementary bilateral agreements on agriculture. Mexico has issued a number of documents relating to the implementation of the agreement.

Implementation of the Agreement

   

Article 70 of the Agreement establishes the EFTA-Mexico Joint Committee, comprised of representatives of each party, to supervise the implemenation of the Agreement. The Joint Committee is to meet regularly, normally once a year.

The first meeting of the EFTA-Mexico Joint Committee took place in Mexico City on 22 October 2002; the second was held in Geneva on 07 November 2003. The third meeting took place in Mexico City on 03 March 2005. the fourth meeting took place in Geneva, Switzerland on 22-23 September 2008. The fifth meeting was held in Mexico City on 07 may 2010. The sixth meeting is scheduled to take place in Geneva, Switzerland in 2012.

  Broadening and Modernization of the Agreement
   

In January 2016, as part of the 46th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the government of Mexico and the EFTA countries signed a Joint Declaration on the start of negotiations for the revision of their FTA.

Delegations from the EFTA States and Mexico held the first round of negotiations for a comprehensive review of their existing FTA on 10-13 May in Geneva, Switzerland. The second round took place in Mexico on May 10-13, 2016. Mexico and EFTA held their third round of negotiations for a review of their trade agreement on 17-20 January 2017 in Lugano, Switzerland.
