On 7 August 2007 Chile and Australia began negotiations of a free trade agreement in Canberra, Australia. On 27 May 2008, after four rounds of negotiation, Chile and Australia concluded negotiations of a free trade agreement.

The Chile-Australia Free Trade Agreement was signed at Parliament House in Canberra on Wednesday, 30 July 2008.

On 23 January 2009 the Chilean Senate approved the Free Trade Agreement Chile-Australia. On February 4^th both countries exchanged ratification notes of the Agreement. The Chile-Australia FTA entered into force on 6 March 2009.
