On 7 August 2007 Chile and Australia began negotiations of a free trade agreement in Canberra, Australia. On 27 May 2008, after four rounds of negotiation, Chile and Australia concluded negotiations of a free trade agreement.

The Chile-Australia Free Trade Agreement was signed at Parliament House in Canberra on Wednesday, 30 July 2008.

On 23 January 2009 the Chilean Senate approved the Free Trade Agreement Chile-Australia. On February 4^th both countries exchanged ratification notes of the Agreement. The Chile-Australia FTA entered into force on 6 March 2009.

The first meeting of the Administrative Commission of the agreement took place in Santiago, Chile, on 26 May 2011. The second meeting of the Commission was held in Canberra, Australia, on 2-3 October 2014.
