  Background and Negotiations
    Costa Rica and China established a Joint Working Group to study the feasibility of Costa Rica-China Free Trade Agreement. The first meeting was held on 9-11 January 2008. The second and third meetings of the Joint Working Group were held in Beijing, China on 7 May 2008; and Puntarenas, Costa Rica, on 7-8 July 2008 respectively. The Joint Study Group Report on the Feasibility of an FTA was released on 13 August 2008.

On 17th November 2008 China and Costa Rica signed a memorandum of understanding launching negotiations of a free trade agreement. The first round of negotiations took place on 21 January 2009. The second round was held in Shanghai, China in April 2009. The third round took place in San Jose, Costa Rica from 15-17 June 2009. The fourth round took place in Beijing, China, in September. The fifth round of negotiations was held on 2-6 November 2009 in Beijing.

On 10 February 2010, after six rounds of negotiations, Costa Rica and China concluded their free trade negotiations. On 08 April 2010, the Costa Rica-China Free Trade Agreement was signed in Beijing, China. Both parties agreed to implement the Agreement beginning on the second half of 2010, after the approval procedures are completed in both countries.

  Entry into Force
   

On 31 May 2011, Costa Rican Legislative Assembly approves Costa Rica-China FTA. On 13 June 2011, the President of Costa Rica signed the agreement into law.

The Free Trade Agreement between Costa Rica and China enters into force on 01 August 2011.

  Implementation of the Agreement
   

Article 135 of the Costa Rica-China FTA establishes the Free Trade Commission, comprised of ministers of both countries, which is to oversee the implementation of the agreement. On 25 April 2014, the second meeting of the Commission took place in San José, Costa Rica.
