| Costa Rica and China established a Joint Working Group to study the feasability of Costa Rica-China Free Trade Agreement. The first meeting was held on 9-11 January 2008. The second and third meetings of the Joint Working Group were held in Beijing, China on 7 May 2008; and Puntarenas, Costa Rica, on 7-8 July 2008 respectively. The Joint Study Group Report on the Feasibility of an FTA was released on 13 August 2008.
On 17th November 2008 China and Costa Rica signed a memorandum of understanding launching negotiations of a free trade agreement. The first round of negotiations took place on 21 January 2009. The second round was held in Shangai, China in April 2009. The third round took place in San Jose, Costa Rica from 15-17 June 2009. The fourth round took place in Beijing, China, in September. The fifth round
of negotiations was held on 2-6 November 2009 in Beijing.
