Canada - Jordan

  Background and Negotiations

On 20 February 2008, Canada and the Kingdom of Jordan launched negotiations toward a Free Trade Agreement. The free trade negotiations, as well as the environment an labor cooperation agreements were concluded on 25 August 2008.

On 28 June 2009, Canada and Jordan signed four new agreements to increase trade and investment: the Canada-Jordan Free Trade Agreement (FTA), along with related agreements on labour cooperation and the environment; and, a foreign investment promotion and protection agreement (FIPA). On 15 September 2009, the Government of Canada tabled the first three Agreements in the House of Commons and the FIPA Agreement in the Parliament for their debate and review. On 17 November 2009, The Government of Canada introduced legislation to implement the Canada-Jordan FTA and related agreements on labour cooperation and environment. It is anticipated that the FTA and related Agreements could enter into force in early 2010.
