MSME Newsletter - OAS WEE MSME Clearinghouse Experience - Grenada

We are delighted to share experiences from the Spice Isle, Grenada, our third country highlighted from the OAS Women Economic Empowerment project’s MSME Clearinghouse. We begin with our National Focal Point institutions then view some insightful resources from members of our National Working Group.

Grenada Investment Development Corporation - Business Development Center The Business Development Center plays a key role in the provision of entrepreneurial and business development services, technical assistance, training and grant assistance. They create an awareness about entrepreneurship in schools, guide business startups, facilitate the upgrade of existing enterprises through technical assistance, grant financing and handholding support and enhance the skills of potential and existing entrepreneurs through training.

The Grenada National Organization of Women (GNOW)

The Grenada National Organisation of Women Inc. (GNOW) is the umbrella non-governmental organisation (NGO) for the women of Grenada. It is a vibrant national women’s organisation addressing the needs of all segments of the female population of Grenada and attracting national and international support for gender equality, gender equity, women’s empowerment and involvement in development including economic, social and political dimensions.

The Grenada National Training Agency The NTA provides Caribbean Vocational Qualification and National Vocational Qualification certification to candidates from Approved Training Centres, on the job training programmes, community-based training programmes and the Assessment of Prior Learning Programme who have demonstrated all of the required competencies.

New Life Organization (NEWLO)

NEWLO aims to provide quality vocational and life skills training for disadvantaged young men and women and people of all ages, religions and creeds, facilitating growth and sustainable development of the individual in relation to the family, the community and the nation.

Grenada Development Bank

The primary purpose of the Grenada Development Bank is to assist in the economic development of Grenada by providing financial and technical assistance in the areas of Agriculture, Fisheries, Tourism, Industry, Housing, Small Business Development and Human Resource Development. 

Access information and requirements for the small business development fund. The funds for the Small Business loans could be utilized for all aspects of business including working capital. Financing may be used for startup activities or expansion of existing operations.

Argentina

Ministry of Economy invests more than $720 million to promote digital innovation of MSMEs

The Competitiveness Support Program will allocate non-reimbursable contributions to increase the competitiveness and productivity of more than 300 micro, small and medium-sized enterprises, improve technological infrastructure, promote the digitization of the industry and training in 4.0 skills.

Argentine SMEs generated 140,000 jobs in the first quarter

On the International Day of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, the Secretariat of Industry and Productive Development of the Ministry of Economy highlighted the relevance for the development of the Argentine economy.

Brazil

Micro and small enterprises generated 7 in every 10 new jobs in May

The balance of formal jobs generated in the country continues to be determined directly by the authority of micro and small enterprises. In the last month of May, according to the survey done by Sebrae from the data of the General Cadastro System of Empregados e Desempregados, 7 in every 10 job vacancies were created by SMEs.

Program to support the digitization of SMEs

Fund will grant subsidies of $1.2 million to promote the digitization of small businesses and cooperatives. There are 480 spaces available. The program includes a catalog of free business courses in technology issues.

Ministry of Economy and Sercotec announce new program to support the development of cooperatives

Initiative will grant subsidies to create and strengthen this type of organizations in the country.

The request of MinCIT seeks to recognize that public policies should take into account the heterogeneity of SMEs in sectoral areas, due to their geographical location and socioeconomic conditions.

Ten thousand small grocery store owners and microentrepreneurs graduate from the “Emprendamos Juntos” program of MICM and Coca-Cola

Some 10,000 small grocery store owners and microentrepreneurs graduated from the "Let's Undertake Together" program organized by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Mipymes (MICM) and the Coca-Cola System, which is made up of the Coca-Cola Company and its Bottler in the country, Bepensa Dominicana.

The Government of El Salvador, through the National Commission for Micro and Small Enterprises (CONAMYPE), with the support of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) organizes the "National Forum Exportas SV". This forum is aimed at entrepreneurs and SMEs with export potential and those who already export, and who wish to update their knowledge in the area of international trade belonging from the following economic sectors: handicrafts, textiles and clothing, footwear, technological development, food, beverages, and food agribusiness.

The Ministry of Production (Produce), through the General Information Technology Office, published the directory of MSMEs and large manufacturing companies on the Open Data Portal of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers.

America’s Seed Fund Road Tour Coming to the Midwest to Engage Small Businesses Working on High-Tech, High-Impact Ideas

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced it will launch a road tour to Midwest states connecting entrepreneurs working on advanced technology to the country’s largest source of early-stage funding – America’s Seed Fund. America’s Seed Fund, comprised of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, supports next-generation research & development (R&D), providing over $4 billion each year in non-dilutive funding from 11 participating federal agencies.

U.S. Small Business Administration Announces Strategic Alliance to Support Small Business Exporters

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced the signing of the Strategic Alliance Memorandum (SAM) with the International Trade & Forfaiting Association (ITFA). ITFA and SBA strive to facilitate the expansion of trade and trade finance globally to reduce barriers for small businesses selling abroad. Together, the SBA and ITFA will work to educate exporters and lenders on financing methods and risk mitigation solutions necessary to facilitate global trade.
