Canadian Government Releases Canada's Proposals for the FTAA Agreement
News Release - December 13, 2000
At the Toronto Ministerial, held in November 1999, Ministers instructed the FTAA Negotiating Groups to prepare a draft text of their respective chapters for Ministers' review in Buenos Aires in April 2001. Ministers also instructed the Trade Negotiations Committee (TNC) (comprised of each country's Vice-Minister for Trade) to begin discussions of the overall architecture of a FTAA agreement. Given that the FTAA negotiating process functions on a consensus basis, the texts which are now being drafted by the Negotiating Groups for Ministerial Review in Buenos Aires would require the consensus of the 34 participating countries to be made public. It is Canada's position that the texts should be made public at that time. To ensure that Canadians continue to have clear up-to-date access to information concerning Canada's trade policy direction during the FTAA negotiations, Canada's Written Submissions to the Negotiating Groups and to the TNC are published below.
