In 1994, Chile and Ecuador signed an Economic Complementarity Agreement (ACE N˚32), whose objective was to create an expanded economic space between the two countries.
In October 2004 both countries issued a Joint Communiqué announcing that they would negotiate a free trade agreement. Chile and Ecuador signed the Economic Complementation Agreement N˚65 on 10 March 2008.
On 25 January 2010, the ACE N˚65 entered into force, replacing ACE N˚32 and including chapters on trade in services, investment and modernization of the dispute settlement mechanism.
