  Background and Negotiations
   

The CARICOM-Costa Rica negotiations were launched in October 2002 in Trinidad and Tobago. On 09 March 2004, after three rounds of negotiation, CARICOM and Costa Rica signed a free trade agreement in Jamaica.

  Entry into Force
   

The Costa Rican legislature approved the free trade agreement on 09 August 2005. Costa Rica and Trinidad and Tobago exchanged ratification instruments and the agreement entered into force for these two countries on 15 November 2005. The agreement entered into force between Costa Rica and Guyana on 30 April 2006, between Costa Rica and Barbados on 01 August 2006, and between Costa Rica and Belize on 10 March 2011. Jamaica approved the implementation of the CARICOM Free Trade Agreement on 06 May 2013. In April 2015, Jamaica ratified the agreement and announced that the agreement will entry into force on June 1, 2015.

  Implementation of the Agreement
   

The First Meeting of the Joint Council, established under the Free Trade Agreement between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Government of the Republic of Costa Rica, was held on 17-18 June 2015, in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
