In October 2010 Canada and Honduras agreed to launch bilateral negotiations toward a free trade agreement. The first round of negotiations took place in Ottawa, Canada, in December 2010. The second round of negotiations was held in Tegucigalpa, Honduras on 14 February 2011. Both countries announced the conclusion of their free trade negotiations on 12 August 2011. The Free Trade Agreement between Canada and Honduras was signed on 05 November 2013, in Ottawa, Canada.

On 28 January 2014, the Government of Canada introduced legislation to implement the Free Trade Agreement with Honduras.

On 19 June 2014, the Government of Canada announced that legislation to implement the Canada-Colombia FTA had received Royal Assent.

The Canada-Honduras Free Trade Agreement and parallel agreements on labor and environmental cooperation entered into force on 1 October 2014.
