Brazil - Chile
  Background and Negotiations
   

Brazil and Chile held the first round for the negotiation of a free trade agreement on June 6-8, 2018 in Brasilia. The new agreement will include topics such as services, electronic commerce, facilitation, labor issues, environmental issues, trade and gender, and SMEs. The second round of negotiations of a free trade agreement to complement Economic Complementation Agreement (ECA) No. 35 was held in Santiago, Chile from August 7 to 10, 2018. The third round of negotiations concluded in Brasilia on September 14, 2018.

On October 22, 2018, Brazil and Chile concluded their free trade negotiations after four rounds. This Free Trade Agreement complements ECA 35 that has been in force since 1996. It includes chapters on: Trade Facilitation, Competition Policy, Temporary Entry of People, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), Good Regulatory Practices, Electronic Commerce, Trade in Services, Telecommunications, Trade and Gender, Trade and Environment, Trade and Labor Issues, Economic and Trade Cooperation, Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, Technical Barriers to Trade and Regional and Global Value Chains. In addition, the agreement incorporates the Investment and Financial Services Agreement that was signed by both countries in 2016 and the Public Procurement Agreement signed in April 2018. On November 21, 2018, Brazil and Chile signed a new Free Trade Agreement in Santiago, Chile.

  Entry into Force
   

On March 10, 2020 the Foreign Relations Commission of the Chilean Chamber of Deputies approved the Free Trade Agreement between Chile and Brazil. Chile's Chamber of Deputies approved the agreement on May 6, 2020. On August 12, 2020, the Senate of Chile approved the Free Trade Agreement between Brazil and Chile. The Senate of Brazil approved the Agreement on September 29, 2021. The Chile-Brazil Free Trade Agreement entered into force on January 25, 2022.

  Implementation
   

On May 11, 2023, took place the First meeting of the Group for the Implementation Plan for Chapter 18 -“Trade and Gender”- of the Free Trade Agreement between Chile and Brazil.

On May 16, 2023, Chile and Argentina held the first meeting of the Trade and Environment Committee, established under Chapter 13 on Trade and Environment of the Free Trade Agreement between Chile and Argentina.
