  Background and Negotiations
   

On 31 May 1999, in Ottawa, Canada, the countries of the Andean Community -- Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela -- signed a Trade and Investment Cooperation Agreement (TICA) with the Government of Canada.

On 7 August 2002 the Government of Canada announced the intention to begin preliminary talks with the members of the Andean Community on a possible free trade agreement. Canada, Colombia and Peru announced the launch of negotiations towards a free trade agreement on 7 June 2007. On 26 January 2008, after three rounds of negotiations, Canada and Peru concluded their FTA.
